About Porcelain Crowns

A crown (or cap) is a tooth-shaped covering that fits over the entire surface of a decayed or damaged tooth. Once properly fitted by your dentist, it is permanently affixed to restore the tooth’s original shape and function. Whereas a filling typically restores part of a tooth, a crown can be used when a much larger portion of the tooth requires restoration.

Although crowns can be made from several different materials, porcelain is the most popular choice because it is extremely natural-looking and luminous. Porcelain crowns are fully customizable, highly durable, and often a more cost-friendly option than alternative restorations.

Crowns are a great option for:

  • Fixing broken, fractured, or decayed teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement (for example, making teeth even or covering discolored teeth)
  • Repairing fractured fillings
  • When you need a large filling
  • A safe alternative to a tooth extraction

A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. During the first, your dentist will take highly accurate impressions of the tooth that is to be crowned. These will be used to create your custom porcelain crown as well as a temporary crown to protect your tooth while your new crown is being fabricated by a dental laboratory.

During your second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed and the underlying tooth will be thoroughly cleaned. Your new crown will then be carefully secured in place for a precise and comfortable fit.

At Hingham Dentistry, we only use the safest materials and most advanced technology to create crowns designed for your comfort and protection. As with natural teeth, proper oral hygiene, good eating habits, and regular dental visits are recommended to extend the life of the crown.
